Large Kitchen: First Place https://www.homeanddesign.com/2023/06/24/first-place-large-kitchen/ Sun, 25 Jun 2023 02:00:29 +0000 https://www.homeanddesign.com/?p=81102 In the hands of EL Studio, a compartmentalized 1929 bungalow in Northwest DC’s Kent neighborhood became an open-plan abode designed with entertaining in mind. A bar area in the home’s center flows into a sleek kitchen at the back of the house; glass wall panels fold open to bring the outdoors in. Behind the bar, a pantry lit by clerestory windows keeps clutter at bay with abundant prep space and storage.

The kitchen is delineated by dark-stained HenryBuilt custom cabinetry that complements walls painted in Farrow & Ball’s Studio Green. A Paperstone counter tops an island where casual meals take place.

Designers reconfigured the main level, creating a spacious kitchen in the former dining room. The kitchen boasts an oversized island topped with Calacatta Lincoln marble, which also appears on the backsplash. Appliances are hidden behind panels of custom cabinetry; pendants by Rejuvenation lend an industrial edge. An adjacent scullery features additional storage and prep space. A hydronic heating system is concealed beneath white oak flooring in a herringbone motif.

Heated and slip-proof porcelain-tile floors and matching wall tiles create a quiet backdrop for a massive slab of quartzite, installed as a focal point in the shower. Touch-latch shower niches stow away toiletries.

A floating double vanity occupies the facing wall. Its silky, matte-glass top flows into glossy, integrated sinks and hovers above drawers with gray glass fronts. Wall-mounted chrome faucets and a custom backlit mirror complete the minimalist tableau.

So the owners enlisted Slate Design & Remodel to transform the space into a bright, tranquil retreat with spa-level amenities. First, the designers gutted the previous bath—step-up whirlpool tub and all. Then they outfitted the large room with a “tricked-out” shower offering myriad spray options along with a soaking tub set on a carpet of decorative tile. Plenty of storage—including a double vanity opposite the shower and a corner cabinet—keeps clutter at bay. A glamorous crystal chandelier crowns the finished space.

The widened footprint allowed the architects to craft gracious public spaces—including an ample kitchen spanning the rear of the home. Architect VW Fowlkes applied timeless materials to the modern tableau, from mottled-plaster walls to warm oak floors, millwork and bleached-walnut cabinets. A tapered Caesarstone exhaust hood floats over the generous island and its lacquered cabinets; doors on either side of the work area lead outside to an ipe deck. At the heart of the plan, a narrow galley kitchen and dining room were combined and a rear extension added, establishing a spacious new kitchen with a large island. Walnut cabinets, black quartzite countertops and a tile floor detail the space, which opens to a deck on the left.

To meet their sustainability goals, the owners replaced gas appliances with electric ones, including an induction cooktop. Equipped with solar panels, the home has achieved net zero status.

The primary bath was no exception. Though the owners’ bedroom—not their bathroom—fronts the ocean, a clever plan lets them enjoy sea views via a strategically placed, floor-to-ceiling pocket door on the bedroom side. Meanwhile, fins installed on the exterior of a side window screen the bath from neighbors. Blue-glass wall tile and a white-painted double vanity echo the home’s coastal habitat. Sand-colored ceramic floor tile blends seamlessly with the bedroom’s wooden flooring.

An MTI soaking tub nestles beside a glass-enclosed shower clad in Ann Sacks tiles that mimic rolling waves. A custom wood vanity supports Native Trails vessels while circular, LED-lit mirrors are suspended against a bronzed-mirror backdrop. Jamieson added further interest with boldly patterned draperies. An island with a raised, leathered-granite countertop screens prep space from the living/dining area. A central range wall is flanked by custom walnut cabinetry that neatly conceals the fridge and freezer. Architect VW Fowlkes took on the challenge, envisioning the kitchen as an elegant vestibule that would reflect the building’s pre-War origins. A wall of floor-to-ceiling oak panels hides the refrigerator, freezer and pantry. Reeded edging on the millwork reflects trim elsewhere in the home. Rather than installing upper cabinets on the flanking walls, Fowlkes clad them in London Grey Caesarstone to keep the tiny space as airy as possible. A laylight in the vaulted ceiling emits a soft glow.

Among the home’s shortcomings: a cramped, dysfunctional primary bath that could not be expanded due to existing infrastructure.

Principal Donna Moore got busy. She installed new plumbing, added ventilation and rebuilt the shower and bath floors. The toilet was relocated to accommodate a quartz-topped custom vanity. New, dimensional white tile clads the shower enclosure, now outfitted with safety features. Moisture-resistant Thibaut wall coverings on the walls and ceiling, says Moore, “are the jewels of the space.”

The bathroom redo proved challenging, as the door’s location prohibited installing a full vanity. Thinking outside the box, the design team opted for a salvaged walnut slab with a live edge that could be cut to fit the space; stained ebony to match the walnut floor, it’s paired with a white vessel sink.

The walls are clad in a blue-and-gold paper and the ceiling painted in the same moody-blue hue. Gold-leaf sconces complete the space.

Principal Greg Wiedemann and his team replaced a dated rear addition with a new one housing the kitchen and breakfast area, enhanced by a wall of windows. “The kitchen employs a palette of deep navy blue and gold, a subtle homage to the Naval Academy,” notes Wiedemann.

The team removed a wall separating the kitchen and living area, then closed off a niche on the back kitchen wall to create a walk-in pantry disguised by cabinet doors. A range wall provides a focal point while flat-fronted cabinetry and Caesarstone counters convey streamlined appeal.

Designer Jonas Carnemark made the dream a reality, reimagining the galley-style space with matte SieMatic SLX cabinetry. A central island with a black Silestone countertop houses a sink, dishwasher and trash pullouts. Behind it, a marble-look ceramic-tile backsplash anchors the Wolf range, surrounded by more storage.

The plan also created a refrigerated wine room under the adjacent stairway. A linear chandelier above the island and illuminated bronze channels that take the place of cabinet hardware impart a touch of glam.

The winning projects were notable for their ingenious use of materials—from bold 3D backsplash tile and shiplap siding to industrial-look, aluminum-clad cabinetry. The ubiquitous gray-and-white palette is losing steam—particularly in the kitchen, where dual-color, stained-wood and painted surfaces are taking center stage. A Chevy Chase family asked designer Therese Baron Gurney to revamp their traditional kitchen. Collaborating with Julia Walter of Boffi, Baron Gurney conjured a spare, modern space with improved functionality.

The redesign centers on a Carrara-topped island with a glass base at one end that creates space for seating. A wall of cabinetry keeps clutter at bay. “Vertical cabinets provide a modern aesthetic, organize appliances and maximize storage,” Baron Gurney explains. A floating desk can hold multiple computers; a printer and other equipment are stored in an adjacent pantry.

The designer selected dark-stained titanium for the upper cabinets, while the lower cabinets are lacquered matte-white. An adjacent dining area hosts guests in style.

While renovating a Logan Circle condo, architect Richard Loosle-Ortega of KUBE architecture was tasked with integrating the kitchen with the home’s new, open plan. After removing a dropped ceiling and non-structural piers, Loosle-Ortega conceived a seamless design in which materials unify the spaces. “They operate as layers,” he explains. “Dark-stained ash, cherry and aluminum surrounding the fireplace are replicated on the kitchen island and rear cabinetry.”

Lights are encased in a slatted-wood “trellis” suspended from the ceiling above the island. The slats continue down the wall and provide definition to the kitchen. Exposed-copper pipes are a design element, while bamboo covers both the floor and one wall, where it conceals pantry cupboards and a powder room.

A diminutive powder room was elevated to minimalist oasis in the hands of designer Therese Baron Gurney, who collaborated with Julia Walter of Boffi Georgetown on the Chevy Chase project. The space is anchored by an accent wall of textured penny tile; an asymmetrical mirror and an off-center Bocci pendant hang above a cylindrical, freestanding sink basin and stand made of poured resin.

The other walls are clad in an embossed Maharam wall covering. “Subtle textures and a palette of serene blue, pure white and metallic gray evoke an ethereal atmosphere,” Baron Gurney says. Wide-plank, white-oak flooring runs parallel to the accent wall and recessed lighting washes the surfaces, making the small space feel more expansive.
